What to Do When Street Lights Are Flashing?

When you see lights in the street flashing, the first thing I want you to do is report it. You need to report it to your local jurisdiction, whether it be the city or the municipality.

You need to tell them, “Hey, these lights are flashing; you need to come and fix them.”
The power is either fluctuating, they have bad wiring, or the sensors just aren’t working correctly. You can argue with me all day long whether you like streetlights or not, but I want every single one of those suckers working on my street so it’s lit up like a Christmas tree!
So, if they’re not working on your street, let somebody know. Don’t depend on them to see where you’re going. That happened to me several times in the last week alone—driving around in the middle of nowhere, and you can’t see a damn thing because there’s not a streetlight to be found. Then you come up to one, and they’re flashing on and off

Why Do Street Lights Flicker or Flash?

Street lights will flicker and flash for several reasons:

  1. Power fluctuations: If the voltage coming from your utility company drops significantly (lower than about 115 volts) for a fraction of a second, it’s not enough volts to burn the light but is enough volts to turn it off and then back on.
2.Bad wiring: Street lights that have been around for a long time have wiring issues, which can affect the intensity of the light.
3.The sensor: Lights will use sensors to tell them to come on and go off. As long as it’s daylight, they’ll stay off. When it gets dark, they’ll come on. But if the sensor is bad, they’ll just come on and then flash off again.

How Can You Report a Flashing Street Light?

If you have a street light flashing on and off, the No. 1 thing you need to do is report it. You need to let your city, municipality, or local jurisdiction know, “Hey, streetlight No. 5400 is turning off over here on this street. You need to get somebody out here to fix it!” You can do this through the report  on your computer or by calling them to report it. When you tell them the exact number of the light and exactly where it is, they will come out and fix it.
That’s how you handle a flashing streetlight.

What to Do if Street Lights Are Flashing During the Day?

If you have a street light that—no matter what—just stays on during the day, you have a sensor problem. It’s a bad sensor. These guys get hit by lightning on occasion and they’re damaged. Or, quite frankly, some of them are just so old that they aren’t great anymore. So, all day long this light shines and wastes energy.
You need to report it. You can let your city, your municipality, or your local jurisdiction know, “Hey, these lights are staying on too long. They need to come and fix them.” When you report it, they will come out and replace the sensor for you.

    Summary

When I see flashing lights on a road, regardless of whether I’m driving or walking, it makes me nervous. It’s not just blinking; it’s dangerous. Beyond blinking lights being dangerous in and of themselves, if they’re blinking, it usually means there’s some kind of a problem.
Go report the lights. Don’t walk or drive when the lights are on and it’s dark outside. Go report the issue so they can fix it.
